Nutrition fuels Fitness

My first race was a success! I ran the RIDA "Nutrition Fuels Fitness Race" this morning, my first race of the season! Warm, sunny and beautiful we hit it at the perfect time and had lovely weather for my first 5k of the season. It was a fast race, there were some great numbers so I felt good coming in #29. I actually ended up coming in first place for my division, with a time of 21:30 so it was a successful race!

For my pre-race mini-breakfast I chose a more substantial "meal" than my usual before run snack, because I knew it would be a couple hours until my race- I had a whole wheat english muffin with 1 tbsp PB and 2tsp jam.

It fueled me very well during my race, and afterwards I had a post-race orange (my favorite to re-fuel after a run!) and 1/2 a mini vitamin water to replace some electrolytes. [No pic, I don't bring my camera to races!]

To celebrate our first race, my Mom (who walked the race and did very well herself!), as well as my sister and her friend Megan, tried a new place for lunch along Main Street of the town the race was in. We ate at Cornucopia, a restaurant that boasts itself as "organic with attitude"! I thought it sounded good, and the lunch choices, although limited, sounded fabulous so we knew we had to give it a try! I had their most popular lunch special, the "When Harry Met Sally". My mom had it as well- this was most appropriate because my mom was the one who introduced me to the movie, now one of my favorite "classics!" "I'll have what she's having!". The popular dish lived up to it's rave reviews- a toasted baguette topped with fresh organic goat cheese and roasted red tomatoes witha balsamic glaze, as well as a side of baked pub fries... mmm! I ate both halves of the baguette and all of the sweet potato "fries", I'm not a big white potato fan. It was absolutely fantastic, tasty and just enough after running the beautiful race! The walk to and from the restaurant was very pleasant as well, it didn't start raining until the way home so we were very lucky in that sense!

Today I'm going grocery shopping for some of this week's staple items, as well as tonight's dinner... I have an interesting Indian feast planned I'm very excited about!
I don't have too much homework this weekend, but I'm not working at all so I'm glad to have some time to relax during the day, and I'll get some work done tonight and tomorrow night- I need a bit of rest every now and again!

Thanks for the congrats, guys!

I've been working at distance running for about two years now; so I've learned to pace myself at longer distances (4-6 miles) so I am a lot faster at shorter distances where I can use my energy in a more efficient manner! This winter I trained about 5 days a week, running 5-6 miles on a flat course when I was on the track, or a 2-4% incline when I was on the treadmill, to keep me in shape for the racing season! Now I'll be running outside more, so I'll be running less miles, but doing more hills to prepare me for some tougher races coming up!
