Happy 2009!

It's going to be pretty hard to beat 2008, that's for sure- but I'm so excited for the New Year! I love new beginnings, a chance for a fresh start!

This morning I started off my day with 1 cup 0% chobani, 1/4 cup slivered almonds and 3/4 cup fresh blueberries.

It was delicious and filling, but the funny part I found out AFTER I ate my breakfast was how similar my breakfast was last year on New Year's Day!

I spent the morning at my parents' house relaxing, and then I hopped on the treadmill for an awesome 45-minute run/walk workout- 304 calories burned!

After my workout I snacked on a perfectly ripe banana while I made my lemon cake (recipe from Fitness Magazine) for later this evening. I had a tiny taste of the batter and ohmigosh, I already know it's going to be fabulous! It's definately NOT a low-cal or fat cake, but the good part is it's made with healthy fats, from a few eggs and olive oil!

After my cake was done, I got hungry so I made myself an easy lunch of a honey ham sandwich, using 3 slices honey ham, 1 light laughing cow, some romaine lettuce and whole grain dijon mustard on a whole wheat sandwich thin. On the side I had some carrots and a small pear. Should hold me over for a while- we're having dinner early, around 4, so I probably won't need much of a snack this afternoon!

In honor of the New Year, my next installment of my 52 things are about the upcoming year.

10 things I plan to do in 2009

1.Get a new tattoo.
My tattoos are very special to me, they each have deep personal significance. I feel as though as permanent additions to my body, they need to be somewhat significant! Getting a beautiful new symbol inked on me seems like a nice way to start the new year on the right foot. I'm thinking about the 'om' symbol; which, basically means 'the essence of life'. I can't wait!

2.Build more muscle (and loose those holiday pounds!)
This is a continuing goal, because I've already gained a significant amount of muscle mass since I started strength training a couple months ago. But I want to make it my goal to increase my muscle, reduce my body fat and get as toned as possible! I still have a few 'holiday pounds' I'd like to wipe away with proper nutrition and increased exercise.

3.Save more money.
Last year, I used every bit of money in my savings account to spend the summer in Italy, a decision I do not regret one bit. It was an incredible experience that was worth every penny. However, I need to start saving now, because I plan on going to culinary school immediately after graduating from URI. That means I have a little less than 2 years to get together enough money to pick up my life in R.I. and move to wherever I choose to go to culinary school! I better start saving now!

4.Read (at least) 12 books- 1 a month.
I LOVE to read, and I read a lot over the summer, but want to make it my goal to read at least 12 books this year! Reading always makes me happy, I love opening up my mind to new ideas and reading about all sorts of different stories. I'd like to expand my horizons and read things I never would have chosen before!

5.Travel.
This is another ongoing resolution I make every year. I love exploring the world, I spent a good amount of time traveling last year, and I can't wait to discover new places this year!

6.Learn new cooking/baking techniques.
There are a lot of techniques I have yet to try, and I feel much more confident in the kitchen this year than I did last year, so I plan on experimenting and seeing how far my culinary skills can go!

7.Get back into photography.
I've always loved photography, but I haven't spent too much time being creative with it, and I'd like to get back into the artistic side of it- and maybe even sell some of my photos in my town's art fair!

8.Go on a retreat.
A yoga retreat, that it! Kripalau is not too far from my house, and after my work friend Erica told me about her wonderful experience there, I have been dying to go- I plan on going this year!

9.Write in my journal, at least 3x/week.
I've always kept a journal up, but it's been a little inconsistent- I want to remember all my wonderful experiences, so I hope this year I can keep it up!

10.Make my blog bigger and better!
I'm hoping to own my own domain name soon, as well as add some fun elements to make the blog more appealing and fun for my awesome readers. Any suggestions?

Thats about it for now, my last 'thing' will be up within the week!

*Still at the 'rents house, photos up later!*

Hi, I was just wonering after looking at last years post, do you still count calories like that, cause you dont post them now. You dont seem as though you would, I was just curious. Last year around this time I was counting every single calorie that went into my mouth, but have slowly gotten myself to relax with it a bit, thanks to blogs like yours showing me how to be healthy without being obbsessive.. so thanks!

Annie,
No- I don't count calories anymore! I keep a general count in my head, because of my knowledge of nutrition I can do that, just to make sure I'm getting ENOUGH when I exercise more. Other than that, I trust myself to eat when I'm hungry or low on energy, stop when I'm full and eat healthy, whole foods (for the most part!) so that I stay in balance!
